BEFORE EVERTHING ELSE, THERE WAS POETRY…

Omkar Bhatkar started to write poems very early, probably like many others in his early school days he discovered the magic of words and rhythm

Later, when he started doing theatre he could not do away with the purity of poignant poetry and he blended poetry with theatre. Very often his plays were poetic and slowly his written poetry transformed into performing poetry.

He directed several prose plays those were visual poems on stage like Home, Hamartia and Books, Aesthetics of the Unfinished and he also created plays in verse such as Song of the Blue Sea.

Poetry Is more personal and land of the forlorn dreamer, for him.

He went on to create theatre pieces with his poetry which includes ‘Arcadia……the promised Land’, ‘Larbre Etrange- The Strange Tree’.

With his Theatre experiments at St. Andrew’s Centre for Philosophy and Performing Arts he started blending Theatre and Poetry with some of his favorite poems. He created Theatre pieces such as ‘Neruda: Poetry of Love and Loss’ , ‘Last Few Poems of Kamala Das and Sylvia Plath’, ‘Sacred Voices from the West’

In 2017 He self published a collection of Blue Poems under the title of Desires Blue. The poems collected in this book are at the heart of the play ‘desires blue’, a stage fantasy spun from various moments in the poets life.
